You're absolutely on the money with this. One of the reasons so many people define themselves according to their job is that our jobs demand so much from us, both in terms of time and energy. And as a paradigm it seems to be getting worse, and more deeply entrenched. It's a relatively new thing, though—people didn't work like this in the eighties and a lot of them made a lot more money than people working in similar jobs now.
