What people mean by these words is such fascinating territory, and arguably one of the key issues of our times. On one level, a society that has to emphasise these principles is in bad shape because it implies we are universally unkind, unfair and unjust. But on another, much more interesting level, people mean radically different things when they use these words, and attach a whole range of ideas and ideologies to these labels.
