Sometimes I find myself thinking that the traditional French model — marriage with a mistress on the side everyone knows about but never discuss — has a lot going for it. It certainly serves a purpose, and keeps many a perfectly serviceable marriage going the distance. Breaking up the family home in order to start a second family with the mistress is where it becomes morally objectionable.
