Personally speaking, I'm big on context. Without it, I struggle to get under the skin of an installation or a piece of music or whatever it might be. It's slightly geeky I try to "prepare" for a gallery event or concert hall recital. If it's classical music, I want to have listened to the piece at least five times so I can really start to appreciate the live performance of it. Time consuming, but worth it.
