On the past friendships point, I find that trying to find a way of honouring those friendships (even if they ended badly) is a subtle shift of mindset which can really help. There's that wonderful line from the Richard Linklater film Before Midnight - "we're all just passing through" - which, for me, helps put the ebbs and flow of friendship into a beautiful realm, the bad bits included.
