It's one of the many sadnesses of long office working hours. When I first joined an organisation with that sort of culture, I thought it would full of friendship and a "we're all in this together" vibe, and it was like that sometimes, but as soon as you put hierarchy into the equation, plus the competitive instinct to rise up through the ranks, you end up just spending eighty hour weeks in an elbows-out culture.
