I'm intrigued by the description of Fraley's writing style: the narrative circling round and round the point it can't bear to make. There's some of that, if memory serves, in Richard Ford's The Sportswriter but not throughout - more a sense of a man coming to terms with the inevitable disasters which have befallen his life, most of which he brought on himself...
