I once had the misfortune of moving in the same circles as someone who only ever spoke to the person she thought of as the most senior or the most intelligent or the most influential in the gathering, which meant sometimes she would speak to me and sometimes she wouldn't. I was quite young at the time but I can still recall the shock of realising there are people out there who behave in those ways!
