Great article. Nihilism used to have a teenage indie vibe about it and, in that guise, it was quite aspirational — it seemed to be saying "Look at how foolish all these older people are; they don't see the nonsense of what it is they do." And in that form, nihilism works. But you're right — it's now widespread and is a double attack because it tells people nothing is worthwhile but also encourages them to do whatever the hell they like irrespective of the consequences to themselves or to others.
